Share the Road license plates raise awareness and encourage everyone to use our roads safely and respectfully. With nearly 6,000 plates on Colorado vehicles, together we’re spreading the word while raising funds to help make Colorado an even more bicycle-friendly state.

STEP ONE

Order your Share the Road certificate PIN online. You’ll make a one-time $25 donation to Bicycle Colorado, and we’ll email your PIN. Please allow a few business days to receive your PIN. If you need it expedited, instructions will be in your confirmation email. Thanks for your support!

Alternatively, if you purchased a paper certificate in person at a Denver-area Email Bicycle Colorado at info@guitarsphere.com to get your PIN for online or in-person processing through the DMV. You’ll need to provide us with your name(s) exactly as they are listed on your vehicle registration in order for us to process your PIN.

STEP TWO

Finish the process through the DMV. You’ll pay a one-time, $50 state specialty license fee plus your regular registration fees. With your certificate PIN, complete your transaction online through DMV in-person or e-services.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Share the Road License Plate cost?
$75 plus your regular registration fee. It breaks down like this: $25 goes to Bicycle Colorado for your approval certificate. It is a one-time, tax-deductible donation that is used for bicycle safety education. $50 goes to your county clerk for the one-time state specialty license plate fee.
How far in advance should I order my Approval Certificate?
  • Ordering online: a few business days (max one week)
  • By phone/email through Bicycle Colorado (720-507-6216): usually same day if we are available for expedited service. Email info@guitarsphere.com to ask about getting it expedited.
My registration expires next week. Can I get my Approval Certificate fast?

There are a few options:

  • Take advantage of the 1-month grace period (example: your registration expired in March, and you have until April 30 to get updated tags on your vehicle). If you are at the end of the grace period and need help, call us directly at 720-507-6216 to get your certificate number.
  • If you’re in your grace period, renew your plates now, then take your certificate to your county clerk’s office and transfer your registration to your Share the Road plates. They’ll issue a credit for the unused months on your current registration.
What types of vehicles can I put a Share the Road license plate on?
Motorcycles, passenger cars, trucks, non-commercial and recreational vehicles that don’t exceed 16,000 pounds empty weight.

Yes. Each certificate is good for one set of front and rear plates.

Share the Road plates further the mission of Bicycle Colorado

We envision a Colorado where riding a bicycle is always safe and convenient for everyone, where bicycling is the top choice for recreation and everyday trips, and where the benefits of bicycling are experienced and valued by all people in our state.

Share the Road license plates enable Bicycle Colorado to encourage safe driving behaviors. The funds raised from plate purchases go directly to our share the road education fund. Learn more about some of the educational programming we are doing to further encourage drivers and bicyclists to share the road.

Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. Bicycle Colorado members believe in eliminating traffic deaths and making the roads safer for vulnerable road users. Learn more about Bicycle Colorado.
