We ride on stolen land

At Bicycle Colorado, we know we must not only talk about the future but acknowledge the past. That is why we reserve space to recognize and honor the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute Nations, who were the original occupants and custodians of the land where we do our work for centuries before genocide and ethnic cleansing led by white settlers. We’re grateful to these communities, their living descendants in Colorado and descendants of those forcefully relocated here for their wisdom and resilience in both the past and present.

Everyone travels and recreates on stolen lands. It’s critical we keep in mind the connections between recreation and transportation and these American Indian communities. Many of us choose how we get around and the impact we have on the land. Many of us also make decisions on transportation systems and how land is used that further influence our community’s footprint. And while our work often discusses freedom of mobility, we must also acknowledge the right for people to stay in place that was taken from American Indians by colonizers.

Thank you for honoring these people and their land with us.
